Here are some top tips for caring for your stainless steel benches.

Clean them regularly

In commercial kitchens, stainless steel benches are often used to prepare food as they are easy to keep clean and have the right properties to keep up with the demands of the kitchen. To remove surface dirt and keep your benches hygienic, clean them regularly with soapy water and a soft cloth – this should prevent germs and staining. Dirty water can leave a residue causing watermarks especially if you’re in a hard water area, so make sure the entire bench is fully dry by using a microfiber cloth to soak up moisture. You can finish off your cleaning routine by using a stainless steel spray and a buffing motion to give it some shine. This should be done regularly throughout the day to maintain good hygiene standards and keep the stainless steel in good condition.

Don’t use abrasive products

Steel can be easily damaged if you use abrasive products such as scourer brushes and strong cleaning materials that contain bleach. Not only will these scratch the surface making your benches look old but the shiny finish will be ruined. Stick to soft cloths and sponges and if you do need to treat stains use a mild detergent such as washing up liquid to avoid discolouration. Always treat stains as soon as possible do minimise damage and improve the longevity of the benches. You should also avoid placing very hot items like saucepans on the bench unless they’re on a heatproof mat or you may risk damaging the steel with untreatable damage.

Remove marks

Although you can buy mark-resistant countertops, most stainless steel benches and stainless steel sinks will show fingerprints easily. However, this is easily resolved with a small amount of glass cleaner and a cloth to wipe away marks without leaving smudges. Keeping the surface smudge-free will ensure your kitchen always looks presentable. You can also remove dried on marks such as food splashes with warm water and a soft sponge, it may take some time to remove the stain but don’t be tempted to use any cleaning agents that may cause damage.
